Homeowners in Northern Virginia ask us this question constantly: what can I do myself, and what should I hire out?
DIY is totally fine for: planting shrubs and flowers, mulching, basic lawn maintenance, small garden bed edging, and painting fences or structures.
Hire a professional for: anything involving base preparation and drainage (patios, retaining walls, driveways), structural concrete or masonry, gas line connections for fire pits or outdoor kitchens, irrigation systems, and any project requiring permits.
The biggest mistake we see is homeowners attempting patio installation without proper base preparation. In Virginia's clay soil, frost heave is a serious issue. A patio without 6–8 inches of compacted gravel base will fail within 2–3 years — regardless of how good the pavers look on installation day.
Our rule of thumb: if the project will require permits, involves underground utilities, or needs to survive 10+ years, hire a professional with a fixed-price contract and a workmanship warranty.
